About Relangi

Relangi Venkata Ramaiah(1910 - 1975)

Relangi born in Tadepalligudam,West Godavari, AP, India on 13th August 1910.He was a comedian during the golden years of Telugu film and acted in several films as Chief comedian, Hero, Anti-hero and Character artist.

During his golden days, Relangi was so popular that he was paid equally as that of a main hero of the film. He was also a good playback singer in Telugu. His songs were so popular that people remember and enjoy even today. That impact was such that audience started expecting separate songs for his character in the movies. He was a professional Harikatha performer and also an expert Harmonium player. He grew up in Kakinada, he didn't show interest in education due to passion in acting.

Relangi started his initial career acting in stage and folk theatre and also took female roles in stage theatre. He started his film career by playing a Vidushaka role in his first telugu film Sri Krishna Thulaabaaram in 1935 under C.Pullaiah direction. Later on, he assisted director C.Pullaiah as a production manager till he got a major break with the film Gollabaama released in 1947. After he played the comedy role in Vidhyarani which was a super hit, then on he was a regular face in all the movies made under Vijaya Films banner from 1950.

His role as Subbisetty in 'Chintamani' (1956) marked a turning point in his career. Reaching Madras(Chennai) towards the end of 1934 he had to struggle a lot to enter the film industry. He found a role in C. Pullaiah's 'Anasuya-Dhruva' (1936), and stayed with him for twelve years. He established himself as an actor with a style of his own in K.V.Reddy's 'Gunasundari Katha' (1949).

Great performances are from Gunasundari Katha, Missamma, Mayabazar, Nartana Sala, Donga Ramudu, Iddaru Mitrulu, Chaduvukunna Ammayilu, Appu Chesi Pappu Kudu, Velugu Needalu, and Vipra Narayana.

He has a son Relangi Satyanarayana Babu acting in TV & Cinemas.

In 1954, he became the first comedian in the Indian film industry to receive the Padma Shri, he also got a Civilian award from the Government of India.
